The Opposite of Poverty

Social Media Campaign

January 2025

Purpose of the Campaign

Poverty is a complex and dynamic issue. In 2009, the U.S. Congress named January as National Poverty Awareness Month to help bring attention to solutions moving us toward ending poverty

As author/attorney/activist Bryan Stevenson has so sagely observed, "The opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." Wea coalition of organizations that protect civil rights and make legal systems more fair for people of limited meanswholeheartedly agree.

The federal Legal Services Corporation estimates that 74% of low-income households experienced at least one civil legal problem in the past year, even if they don't know it's a legal problem. What does this mean for people in these households? It can mean lack of safety, unjust loss of income, housing instability that should have been avoidable, barriers to employment ... and other injustices that frustrate people's efforts to improve their financial situation.

Our legal system is too complex to allow ordinary people to solve their legal problems unless they have legal assistance. Such assistance is civil legal aid

In January, help us spread the word that civil legal aid, by providing access to fair legal solutions, is an indispensable element of the toolbox to reduce poverty in the United States!
