Wisconsinites who aren’t in lower income brackets might not see the blind spots and holes in our legal and government systems, which end up trapping many people of limited means. Although every story is unique, they all show the need for civil legal aid as a problem-solver to resolve these situations. Here is one family’s story.
A hard-working Wisconsin parent had a full-time job to support his two children. Then a series of challenges threatened their stability. "I was dealing with financial hardships and I have two kids. My 9-5 Monday-Friday barely covers my rent and bills."
Challenges for Charlie* began when he let someone borrow his car. That act of kindness ironically kicked off his problems. That person got into an accident with Charlie’s car, ultimately leading to Charlie’s driver’s license being suspended. Charlie didn’t have the financial resources to reinstate his license and started a search for better-paying work to improve his financial situation.
The loss of his license left Charlie in a seeming no-win situation familiar to many Wisconsinites struggling to make ends meet. To get a better-paying job, Charlie needed his driver’s license, but his current salary didn’t cover the costs required to reinstate his license. Charlie felt lost.
What Charlie didn’t realize at first, was that legal help exists for people in his situation, to help them get their licenses back. Charlie was able to get connected with a civil legal aid provider to regain his license and reopen his family’s path to financial security.
"You do not know what this means to me and my family," Charlie said.
While Charlie’s story of driver’s license suspension isn’t unique, not all Wisconsinites in his situation would be able to access the same legal help. Civil legal aid providers in the state are chronically underfunded, having to turn away thousands of people like Charlie every year. Funding for civil legal aid helps ensure that more people like Charlie are able to get the help they need to get back on their feet and support their families.
